Chrysoprase is a green-colored translucent variety of the mineral chalcedony. Of all the varieties of chalcedony, this gemstone is the most valued. The name comes from the Greek (chrysos = golden). The typical apple-green color (which varies from yellow-green to grass-green) is caused by hydrous silicates (or oxides) of nickel (e.g. kerolite, pimelite). The color can fade in sunlight. Green-colored stones were among the most valuable and popular in ancient times. Chrysoprase was already used by the Greeks and Romans. It achieved particular popularity in the 14th century, when Charles IV had it decorated with the St. Wenceslas Chapel in Hradčany and also the chapel at Karlštejn. More recently, it was used to decorate the Sanssouci Castle in Potsdam. It is used in jewelry for rings, earrings and brooches, and for the production of smaller decorative objects.
