Emerald – a green variety of beryl
Emerald is a variety of beryl with the chemical composition Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈. It is valued primarily for its intense green color, which is caused by traces of chromium and vanadium. On the Mohs scale, it has a hardness of 7.5–8, but it tends to be more fragile due to frequent inclusions, which are commonly found in emeralds and are called “jardin”.
