Quality Alexandrites are among the most expensive gemstones in the world, they are very rare.
Alexandrite is one of the most valuable gemstones and is the rarest variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Its origin is magmatic in pegmatites or metamorphic in association with scoryl, phenakite and other minerals. The stone attracted great attention from the very beginning for its striking color change, which scientists could not initially explain. Therefore, like other gemstones before it, it was quickly surrounded by legends and various properties were attributed to it. It was most often said to be a green emerald during the day and a purple amethyst at night.
Alexandrite – a natural gemstone from Sri Lanka with a significant color change
Alexandrite is a rare variety of chrysoberyl famous for its phenomenal color change: in daylight/day-white light it appears green to blue-green, while in incandescent/evening light it changes to red to purple tones. This optical anomaly is caused by traces of chromium (Cr³⁺) in the crystal lattice.
Sri Lanka is one of the classic and prized locations with alexandrite of excellent purity and beautiful color transition. Thanks to its high hardness of 8.5 Mohs, the stone is also suitable for everyday jewelry (ring, pendant) – but at the same time it remains a collector's rarity with limited availability.
Advantages of this stone
significant color change (daylight → incandescent)
origin Sri Lanka (Ceylon) – classic location
high hardness, great for jewelry
natural origin, Chemical composition: BeAl₂O₄ (chrysoberyl) with an admixture of Cr³⁺, which causes the color change.
Note: There are synthetic alexandrites and imitations on the market (e.g. synthetic corundum with a color change). For natural stones, we recommend/provide certification from a reputable laboratory.
What is alexandrite?
A rare variety of chrysoberyl (BeAl₂O₄) with a strong color change – green in daylight, red/purple in incandescent light.
Why does it change color?
This is caused by traces of chromium and the spectral composition of light – the stone absorbs and transmits different wavelengths differently.
Is alexandrite suitable for a ring?
Yes. With a hardness of 8.5 Mohs, it is very durable; we recommend protecting the jewelry from impacts and cleaning it by hand.
How do I distinguish between natural and synthetic alexandrite?
Synthetics (flux/drawing) and imitations exist. Only gemological verification is reliable - we offer/arrange certification.
Where does it come from?
Historically Russia (Ural); today mainly Sri Lanka, Brazil, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar.
Why is it so expensive?
A combination of rarity, beautiful color changes and limited finds - quality pieces are highly valued by collectors.
