Carnelian is a semi-precious stone and a colorful variety of chalcedony. The orange-red color of the carnelian is caused by the contained blood, and according to this color it also got its name: carneus is Latin for meat. It occurs all over the world as a filling of cavities of igneous and sedimentary rocks, where it has precipitated from solutions of silicic acid.
