Description

Opal - Dendritic (Merlinite)

Dendritic opal (moss opal, bush opal) – white, opaque and usually permeated by a network of fine black dendrites (oxides or hydroxides of iron or manganese). Opal is a mineral, hydrogel with fluctuating water content, whose chemical formula is SiO2. n H2O. Water is represented here most often between one and three percent by weight, but in some cases it can reach up to 20%.

Dendritic opal, also known as merlinite, is a beautiful and unique mineral found in Madagascar. This opal gets its name from the dendritic growths found inside the opal that create beautiful and intricate patterns and images. Dendritic opal is clear to milky white in color and is usually transparent or semi-transparent. However, its most distinctive feature is the dendritic pattern, which can vary from simple branches to complex images that resemble trees, leaves or other natural motifs.
