Usually black and completely opaque skoryl can rarely be brownish black, blue-black or even blue. Skoryl adds color to iron and sodium. It is found in various types of rocks.

The crystals are prismatic, acicular, always longitudinally grooved. They also form granular, compact, stalked to fibrous aggregates, arranged irregularly or radially (tourmaline sun).
