Tanzanite is a brown-green, blue to blue-violet gemstone variety of the mineral zoisite, a mineral from the sorosilicate group.

Tanzanite is a purple-blue gem named after Tanzania, where its only site in the world lies. The site is located near the town of Arusha near the volcano Mount Meru, about 50 km as the crow flies southwest of the foot of the Kilimanjaro massif. In addition to the beautiful color, its important property is trichroite (different shades of color depending on the orientation of the crystal). Among the precious stones is one of the younger ones.
