Green Sapphire – A Rare Variety of Corundum
Green sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum (Al₂O₃), which is characterized by green shades ranging from slightly olive to dark emerald. Like other sapphires, it has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, making it very durable and suitable for cutting. Its value increases with the intensity and purity of the color.
Sri Lanka – a place where green sapphires are found
Sri Lanka, historically known as Ceylon, is one of the few places where green sapphires are found. The stones here are characterized by a specific shade of green and high shine, which makes them attractive to jewelers and collectors.
History and uses of green sapphire
Unlike blue sapphires, green sapphires were not as well known in ancient times, but in modern times they are gaining increasing popularity. They are mainly used as an unconventional alternative to emerald or tourmaline.
