Nuummite – a rare mineral from Greenland
Nuummite is a very rare metamorphic rock of volcanic origin that was formed approximately 3 billion years ago. It consists of amphibole minerals – gedrite and anthophyllite. It is typical for its black to dark brown color with pronounced golden, copper or rainbow reflections that create an attractive optical effect.

Appearance and properties of nuummite
Nuummite has a glassy to silky luster and a hardness of 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale. When properly illuminated, golden to copper facets appear on its surface, making it an exceptionally decorative mineral.

Nuummite deposits
Nuummite was discovered in 1810 and named after the Nuuk region in Greenland, where the most famous and highest-quality deposits are found. Other locations are known in Canada and Madagascar, but Greenland specimens are among the most valuable.

Rarity and uses of nuummite
Nuummite is considered one of the rarest collector minerals. Due to its unusual appearance, it is sought after not only by mineralogists, but also as a decorative and jewelry stone.

Due to a change in the angle of view or lighting, a phenomenon called iridescence occurs in Nuummite. Its only deposit is in Greenland. This rare mineral is very often sought after by collectors and gem dealers.
