Haüyne (Haüyn) – rare natural mineral from Afghanistan

Haüyne belongs to the sodalite mineral group and is highly valued due to its intense color and rarity. The most known variety is deep blue Haüyne, however rare green crystals also exist.

Mineral properties

  • Chemical formula: Na3Ca(Si3Al3)O12(SO4)
  • Hardness: 5.5 – 6 Mohs
  • Crystal system: cubic
  • Color: blue, green

Why Haüyne crystals are usually small

Haüyne forms in alkaline igneous rocks where crystal growth is limited by geological conditions. Large crystals are extremely rare.

Fluorescence of Haüyne

Haüyne may exhibit fluorescence under UV light, typically showing orange, reddish or pink luminescence caused by trace elements in its crystal structure.

What is sodalite group

Haüyne belongs to the sodalite mineral group, a family of tectosilicates with similar crystal structure.
