Tugtupit – a rare mineral from Greenland | MINERALS-STONES®
Tugtupite from Greenland – a rare gemstone of love | Top Quality | MINERALS-STONES®
Tugtupite is one of the true treasures of the mineral world. Its color ranges from soft, gentle pink to deep, vivid red – as if the stone carried a heartbeat of its own. Only a few meaningful deposits exist worldwide, with the most famous located in the Tugtup Agtâ region of western Greenland, where the stone gets its name.
Rarity and Origin
Tugtupite belongs to the sodalite mineral group, chemically Na₄AlBeSi₄O₁₂Cl. It forms only in highly specific pegmatitic environments under rare geological conditions – which is why it is more sought-after among collectors than most pink or red minerals.
At MINERALS-STONES®, we have just stocked exceptional-quality tugtupite with strong dual coloration and high translucency, suitable even for jewelry making.
Fluorescence – the stone that glows
- Under UV light, tugtupite glows neon pink to cherry red.
- Some specimens show color shifts over time under light exposure – as if the stone were “awakening.”
This optical effect is known as tenebrescence.
Inuit Legend
According to Inuit tradition, tugtupite is the stone of love and the living heart of the land.
The legend says that the spirit of the caribou (Tuktu) spilled its blood onto the rock to connect humans with the heart of the Earth.
