Exceptional natural Cavansite from India – an extraordinarily attractive collector's mineral that immediately captures attention with its intense sky-blue to turquoise-blue colour. The brilliant blue crystal clusters create a striking natural contrast against the light-coloured matrix, making Cavansite one of the most visually captivating blue minerals sought after by collectors.
This particular specimen features several distinct groups of blue crystals growing from a pale mineral matrix. Their delicate needle-like to fan-shaped crystal formations, vitreous lustre and remarkable colour saturation create a fascinating three-dimensional structure. A closer look reveals individual elongated crystals and their natural arrangement into brilliant, richly coloured aggregates.
Cavansite is renowned for its extraordinarily intense blue colour, reminiscent of tropical seawater, vibrant azurite or a clear summer sky. Such striking natural colour, combined with delicately developed crystal aggregates, makes this mineral particularly fascinating from both mineralogical and aesthetic perspectives.
Collectors particularly appreciate specimens displaying deep blue crystals, an attractive distribution of individual crystal clusters, well-preserved crystal terminations and a contrasting host matrix. These characteristics contribute significantly to the exceptional appearance of this specimen.
Cavansite is a relatively recently discovered mineral species. It was first found in 1967 in Oregon, USA, and was formally recognised as a distinct mineral species in the early 1970s. The name Cavansite is derived from its principal chemical constituents: calcium, vanadium and silicon.
Mineralogically, Cavansite is a rare hydrated calcium vanadium silicate, with its intense blue coloration associated with the presence of vanadium. It forms delicate prismatic to needle-like crystals, frequently arranged into fan-shaped, rosette-like or spherical aggregates.
The best-known collectible Cavansite specimens originate from the Wagholi area near Pune in Maharashtra, India. This region is internationally celebrated for its beautiful blue Cavansite aggregates, discovered within cavities in the basaltic rocks of the Deccan Traps.
Here, Cavansite frequently forms vivid blue crystal clusters on light-coloured mineral associations. Within these cavities, it may occur alongside apophyllite, stilbite and other secondary minerals. The contrast between the intensely blue crystals and their pale host matrix is one of the defining features of highly attractive Indian specimens.

Cavansite is appreciated not only for its limited geological occurrence but also for its fascinating crystallisation and exceptionally intense blue colour. High-quality specimens featuring prominent, well-preserved crystal aggregates on an aesthetically pleasing matrix are sought after by mineral collectors worldwide. This specimen beautifully demonstrates the striking contrast between brilliant blue crystal formations and their pale natural host rock.
Care instructions: Cavansite is a relatively delicate mineral with fine, fragile crystals. Protect it from drops, vibrations, pressure, direct mechanical contact and aggressive cleaning agents. We recommend keeping the specimen in a mineral display cabinet and removing any dust only with an exceptionally soft, dry brush.
