Description

Pentagonite – India | Rare Natural Mineral with Beautiful Star-Shaped Blue Crystals

Exceptional natural Pentagonite from India – an attractive mineralogical rarity distinguished by its intense azure-blue colour, delicate needle-like crystallisation and spectacular star-shaped crystal aggregates. Against the pale host rock, the brilliant blue crystals create an extraordinary natural contrast, making this specimen a truly captivating collector's piece.

This particular specimen features a rich cluster of vivid blue crystals that naturally extend in different directions, forming a radiant, star-shaped structure. The individual crystals display elongated forms, a pronounced vitreous lustre and deep blue colouring, sometimes accompanied by a subtle violet tint. Their contrast with the light-coloured mineral matrix further enhances their colour intensity and three-dimensional appearance.

Star-Shaped and Radiating Crystallisation – Pentagonite's Most Distinctive Feature

Pentagonite is a mineralogically fascinating species whose slender, needle-like crystals can form open, radiating and star-shaped arrangements. This characteristic crystal habit often distinguishes it from the related mineral Cavansite and gives Pentagonite specimens a particularly dynamic and striking appearance.

Collectors especially appreciate pieces displaying intense blue colour, well-preserved individual crystals, attractive radiating formations and a strong contrast with the host matrix. This specimen stands out for its abundant blue crystallisation, creating a remarkable natural three-dimensional composition.

Pentagonite – A Rare Mineral Related to Cavansite

Pentagonite is a rare hydrated calcium vanadium silicate with the chemical formula Ca(VO)Si₄O₁₀·4H₂O. It has the same fundamental chemical composition as Cavansite but a different crystal structure. The two minerals are therefore polymorphs – distinct mineral species sharing the same chemical composition.

While Cavansite often forms more compact fan-shaped or rosette-like aggregates, Pentagonite is particularly recognised for its open radiating crystal groups and distinctly elongated individual crystals. Both minerals share an intense blue coloration associated with their vanadium content.

India – Famous Pentagonite Localities

One of the world's most significant Pentagonite localities is Wagholi near Pune in Maharashtra, India. This region is internationally renowned for high-quality blue minerals, especially Cavansite and Pentagonite, which form in cavities within the basaltic rocks of the Deccan Traps.

Pentagonite may form beautiful blue crystal groups on pale mineral associations, often in environments containing apophyllite, stilbite and other secondary minerals. The combination of intense blue crystals and a light-coloured mineral matrix is characteristic of visually attractive collector's specimens from this region.

What Makes This Pentagonite Specimen Special?

  • Rare natural Pentagonite from India – a mineralogical rarity from an internationally important collecting region.
  • Intense azure-blue colour – deeply saturated blue, sometimes with a delicate violet tint.
  • Star-shaped and radiating crystallisation – a characteristic three-dimensional arrangement of slender crystals.
  • Rich clusters of blue crystals – an attractive natural composition with pronounced vitreous lustre.
  • Contrasting pale matrix – highlights the colour intensity and delicate structure of the crystal aggregates.
  • Mineralogical relationship with Cavansite – an interesting polymorph with the same chemical composition.
  • Exceptional collector appeal – an attractive addition to specialised mineral collections and display cabinets.
  • A unique natural original – every specimen possesses its own crystal formations, shape and aesthetic characteristics.

A Collector's Rarity with Fascinating Star-Shaped Crystallisation

Pentagonite is especially appreciated for its rare occurrence, extraordinarily intense blue colour and characteristic open radiating crystal aggregates. Visually impressive specimens featuring well-preserved individual crystals on a pale host matrix make attractive additions to mineralogical collections. This piece stands out for its rich blue crystallisation and beautiful contrast against its natural matrix.

Care instructions: Pentagonite is a delicate mineral with fine crystals that are vulnerable to mechanical damage. Protect it from drops, vibrations, pressure, water and aggressive cleaning agents. We recommend displaying the specimen in a mineral cabinet and removing any dust only with an exceptionally soft, dry brush.
