Petalite is a mineral from the group of layered silicates (phyllosilicates), chemically LiAlSi4O10. It was discovered by the Brazilian scientist J.B.A.e Silva at the end of the 18th century. Its name is derived from the Greek word for leaf –petalon. It can be clear, white, pink, gray or white with various shades. Its colorless variety is used in jewelry. The most important deposits include the Minas Gerais location in Brazil, and it can also be found in Western Australia, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Canada.
Petalite – a natural mineral from Brazil
Petalite is a rare lithium silicate known for its purity, pearly to glassy luster and subtle colors from translucent white, pink to grayish shades. It is characterized by high transparency and brittleness, which makes it an attractive mineral for collectors and jewelers.
This specimen comes from Brazil, which is one of the most important sources of petalite in the world. Brazilian pieces are characterized by beautiful clarity and clean crystal surfaces.
Main characteristics:
origin: Brazil
form: natural mineral (unpolished)
color: white to translucent, sometimes slightly pinkish
aesthetics: glassy to pearly luster, high purity
Mineralogical data:
chemical formula: LiAlSi₄O₁₀
system: monoclinic
hardness: 6–6.5 Mohs
luster: glassy to pearly
density: approx. 2.4 g/cm³

Petalite is also an important industrial source of lithium and is used in the production of ceramics and special glasses. In mineralogy and collecting, it is valued for its rarity and the beauty of its clear crystals.
What is petalite?
Petalite is a rare lithium silicate (LiAlSi₄O₁₀), which is characterized by translucency, glassy to pearly luster and white or pink shades.
Where does petalite come from?
Petalite is found in several locations around the world, but Brazil is one of the most important producers of high-purity collector specimens.
What are the properties of petalite?
Hardness 6–6.5 Mohs, glassy to pearly luster, high translucency. It belongs to the group of lithium silicates and is one of the main sources of lithium.
What is petalite used for?
In industry as a source of lithium and an additive to special glasses and ceramics. It is popular in collectors and jewelry for its rarity and aesthetics.
Why is petalite valued?
For its rarity, clarity and mineralogical value. It is sought after by collectors and, due to its limited deposits, is one of the most attractive minerals on the market.
