Baryte
Barite natural mineral crystals | Minerals-stones

Baryte

Barite is a rhombic mineral. The name comes from the Greek word barys – heavy. The older Czech name is živec. It can be easily distinguished from similar minerals by its density. Barite is much heavier. The mineral crystallizes at medium and low temperatures, which often prevail in hydrothermal vein deposits. Most often, these are separate hydrothermal fluorite-barite veins or hydrothermal ore veins with barite. The genesis of barite can also be associated with the sedimentary environment or with cavities in volcanic rocks, and it is also common in a number of metasomatic and stratiform deposits.

Barite – a mineral with high density
Barite is a barium sulfate with the chemical formula BaSO₄. It is one of the heavier minerals, has a high density and a glassy to pearly luster. In nature, it occurs in a wide range of colors – from white, yellow and brown to blue or pink.

Appearance and properties of barite
Baryte crystallizes in a clinker system, most often forming tabular or plate-shaped crystals, often grouped into rosettes resembling flowers. The hardness of barite is 3–3.5 on the Mohs scale.

Barite deposits
Baryte is found all over the world - significant deposits are in Spain, England, the USA or the Czech Republic (Příbram, Horní Slavkov). The most valued is considered to be blue barite from Morocco, which stands out for its beautiful color and aesthetic crystals.

History and use of barite
Baryte has industrial uses, especially in chemistry, construction and in the production of paints. Aesthetic crystals are sought after by collectors and valued for their color diversity and crystal shapes.
