Dioptase is a mineral, copper silicate, crystallizing in the trigonal system. It forms short to long columnar crystals with an arched end, or it occurs in granular to solid aggregates. Dioptas is an unusual mineral that is formed mainly in desert areas. It is very rare, occurring in only a few known sites in the world - in Congo, Namibia and Kazakhstan. Its dark green color is typical, for which it is very popular and sought after among collectors. Interesting fact - dioptase crystals were used as an ornament of Neolithic statues dating from around 7200 BC.
