Description

Emerald is the best known and most valuable variety of the mineral beryl, with a characteristic deep green color. It is due to the chromium content in the structure.
In jewelry, it is used as a precious stone (faceted cuts, cabochons). The most famous jewelry with emeralds include the Necklace of the Spanish Inquisition, Hooker's emerald brooch or the Andean Royal Crown.
Emerald (smaragdos) was first used in ancient Egypt, it was one of the favorite stones in the Middle Kingdom, during the Ptolemaic period and under Queen Cleopatra. The term Emerald means marakata in Sanskrit - an overcome of difficulties. The Indians divided their emeralds from Pakistan (Swat Valley) and Rajasthan into shades according to castes. The emerald was to be a stone of wisdom, prosperity, practical logic and business prowess for ancient thinkers (buddha-ratna). For Persian scholars, the emerald was the stone of eternal life in paradise. The Romans also highly valued the emerald, Pliny the Elder highlighting its color.
The most beautiful and most expensive emeralds come from Colombia. Furthermore, emeralds occur, for example, in Brazil, Africa (Queen Cleopatra's mines in Egypt are very well known), Russia or India.
