Jasper is formed in cavities of rocks of various kinds due to the cooling of hot solutions, gases and vapors escaping from the cooling magma (fills the cavities of basalt and metaphor almonds), where it is formed at low temperatures as a precipitate of silicate solutions. Furthermore, it can be formed by contact metamorphosis of rocks of suitable composition. The Greeks, Romans and Egyptians valued it as a gem. Reliefs and intaglia were carved into the jasper. A large collection of carved jaspers, mostly mined in the Urals, can be found in the St. Petersburg Hermitage. Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia and Hungary Rudolf II. he had a table inlaid with jaspers of many colors. This table was one of the seven wonders of the Renaissance.
